The army has sentenced 24 officers, were a total of 35 were arrested for the crimes committed between 2019 – 2020 as 11 were acquitted by Judge Capt. Joseph James Mangar of the military justice. The cases ranged from rape, looting, and selling of personal rifles the highest sentence was fourteen years in prison and the least to two years in prison.
Previously, the total number was 75 but the army spokesperson Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang says they arrested 75 altogether and due to no evidence to their arrest were therefore released.
The court case took place in Yei leading to the sentencing of the officers at Bilpam SSPDF General Headquarters in front of serving officers including the commander of defense forces Gen. Johnson Juman okot.
Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang has warned those who are serving to remain loyal and not to engage in criminal cases since all cases committed by individuals will also be judged on individual basis.
He has also assured the citizens that since they are there to protect them it’s a mandate to protect the citizens and that they will always punish officers who work contrary.
They were also striped of their ranks to private then to a dismissal from the active list of serving officers.
